Take on Kara

I wanted to set up a page to answer some questions from my readers. So, here goes. (And, please keep the questions coming!)

This has got to be, by far, the most common question I have received, so I’ll start with it:

How, how can a varsity football player be interested in Kara, and why can’t I find Scott at my high school?!

What does a varsity FB player see in a clumsy freshman?  Well…Kara would like to know, too. It has to do with that first time at The Onion. She panicked over what to say and blurted out something about her mother. Just thinking about it later made her blush. Well, her comment stayed with him. Exactly why he keeps Kara guessing through through the second book ”Turnaround”, and then he finally tells her. Even Kara agrees, she just wasn’t ready.  Before.

And, perhaps all I can say is, readers, don’t assume too much about a boy from the outside. There’s a whole lotta shell on those teen frames…and they are pretty selective about who they let in. In fact, let that be a lesson for all your relationships in life. Work hard at getting to know someone…anyone…and if they are working hard at getting to know you, try to figure out why.

More FAQs on The Student Union: Kara’s town is small so there’s not a lot to do. In fact, there’s really not much at all to do.  A few years back, parents got together with town council requesting this is an important need…as much as a library or city hall.  Money to build a Student Union came from tax money and donations.  Rules were determined by a board of  twelve trustees (six are teens) and strictly enforced.  For example, for any sign of bullying The Onion immediately closes until trustees can look into it.  Students work for meal tickets they can use at The Onion.  Kids can have jobs like sweeping floors and cleaning tables. Kids call them the “weepers.” But, sign-ups for these volunteer jobs are done far in advance and there’s a waiting list every year.
